This is all being driven by the move to fiber. Pretty much anything can be distributed over the fiber network: internet, video, voice. Rather than having multiple/redundant cabling and plant equipment they are consolidating everything into fiber.

It makes sense from a cost perspective.

The marketing bullshit is when they promise that new technologies will allow them to pass the cost savings on to the consumer. That never happens.
