This is marketing bullshit... 'we' aren't demanding anything. 'We' can only buy and use what they are providing. This 'consumers are demanding' has always been the marketing lie of history. What they want to do is dump copper entirely and leave all the cities with the clean up costs and costs of removing any copper that isn't in use any more. 40 years ago Michigan Bell stated at a internal 5 regional wide executive closed workshop that they were going to be the first to have 100 dollar minimum phone bills, new fangled hand held independent phones (they were thinking then about radio frequency mobile, I still have one, and end the phone line franchise fees as well. They succeeded in starting that within 15 years.

“We’ve seen a precipitous decline in demand for telephone services provided over our copper networks,” an AT&T spokesperson told CNN. “We are focused on enhancing our network with more advanced, higher speed technologies like fiber and wireless, which consumers are demanding.”
