The new weapon of the Defense Departments throughout the world will rely more and more on hacking as it is stealthy, disruptive, mostly anonymous and does not risk personnel or expensive weaponry and aircraft. Hacking and the need for layer upon layer of cybersecurity as a defense will only get more sophisticated with artificial intelligence. The countries with the best ability to obtain data and to process and analyze it can develop methods of disrupting the networks of other countries. Similarly, AI can be used to help anticipate cyber attacks and develop layers of defenses for critical infrastructure and weaponry..
It will come down to data, data and more data and to analyze it very fast. Silicon photonics is and increasingly will be needed for defense systems throughout the world as we continue on in an AI world. There will need to be aggressive research into any technology that will analyze and transmit data even faster. Unique materials in the right combinations will be a critical need going forward. I view polymers which can be flexibly added to many other materials as a likely winner over the next decade at least. The AI race will be much bigger than the Space Race.
