i don't think patent life is necessarly involved in a perpetual license from v to msft. we don't know what the license stipulated, but i can only hope perpetual means they the licensee is forever bound to that license which i hope stipulates their payment for other vcsy ip software/method as a service.

i think management /lawyers would have known a straight patent license for ip that had a term less than that needed to have the other ip and environment for the patent to be used would be a non starter/useless.....msft could have paid the big bucks upfront but they had some ip losses before that and likely didn't want to commit. i actually wonder if their big plunge into openai was partly due to their perpetual license from vcsy.
