I understand and agree with your point that it would have been helpful to have their measurements confirmed by a neutral party. I wish Thompson had simply gone on the record by reporting the actual values he had measured.

Mundane silk has a tensile strength of about 0.5 GPa (source: https://www.nature.com/articles/418741a) and Golden Orb dragline silk weighs in at 1.3 GPa. Some of the DS measurements were close to 2.0 GPa, if memory serves.

If Thompson had reported measurements of both his mundane silk and the Bam-1 silk, presumably investors could verify his measuring procedure by comparing numbers for mundane silk against reported values and documenting how much stronger than mundane silk the new fibers actually are.

Instead, anyone who wants some indication of the strength of Bam-1 has to dig around through all of the PRs (the values aren’t there) and perhaps locate the newsletters where these values were reported. Different measurements were reported at different times. Which ones is Thompson claiming to have matched?

Suppose Thompson reported 0.5 and 2.0 GPa for mundane and Bam-1 silk samples. Then he could say, “Bam-1 silk is four times tougher than mundane silk.” That kind of simple comparison is easy to get excited about. Statements along the lines of ‘It’s as strong as the samples we measured several years ago” doesn’t carry the same zing.

Having said that, today’s PR was another step forward, both for the company and for investors. More forward steps, please, Mr. Thompson!
