I think you're probably right about the gamey part. Though goat is very popular just about everywhere in the world except here and in the U.K. Though lamb is quote popular there. And here, though not as much as once upon a time.

You can get very good, very young, lamb in Italy. No goat at the supermarket, though. Ostrich, yes. And rabbit. But no goat.

Although the chick doing the cooking said as she was putting it into the oven that it was a "mole"--pronounced like the animal--it is NOT. No chiles, for one thing. Utterly disgusting, for another...
