It's really not all that big a deal where the money comes from, if the idea is good, except that if the money comes from John Stanton, a venture capitalist at best, then you're obligated in who knows what ways, whereas if you get US grant money, you get not only the money, you don't have to pay it back, and you get public crediblity to boot. Take your pick.
