Diesel is used for producing electrical power but mostly for peaking power demands. Diesel generators can quickly come on line and make up for additional demand. However, for continuous power production, diesel is prohibitively expensive to use as a fuel source--it would cost about six or seven times as much as coal for the same electrical energy output.
