My (somewhat) educated guess, rjs 1, is that we should think of Perkinamine as the name for a type or class of polymer/plastic. All variants must have the same or very similar, unique skeletal structure, but it seems the “internally attached” (?) specialized chromophores - the active parts - vary. So one chromophore might be designed to fit into that special little place within the whole molecule to absorb or reflect indigo light inside the plastic, and another might be designed for red light. So they’re different polymers in overall molecular composition, but each is Perkinamine, - or a Perkinamine.
