LWLG whats Old is New and Once and again Plastic is the future at this Sunrise business.
Converts Electrons to Photons
I’ve been invested here for over 20 years. It started in a bay in an industrial park down the street with the goal of creating a stable polymer to switch light. The industry tried for years and spent 100’s of millions to try and create a stable polymer (plastic) but gave up. Lightwave kept working at it, submitting patent after patent while the industry tried to push silicon faster and faster, but Silicon has maxed out at about 50 GHz, Depending on which device you look at Lightwave can do 100 GHz, 200 GHz and as recently as last week announced another world record at 250GHz. Understand that until recently the test equipment was not available to test above 67 GHz. It has been a long road you can see the progress, this is a presentation that I made notes on 4 years ago of what it appeared at the time they needed to do. As info they are now far less than <1 volt and the devices are now 1mm square (back then they were targeting 1 volt and 5mm)

They are currently in 5 foundries, 2 of the foundries are due to report back by the end of 2022. The next 3 by the middle of 2023, and 2 new foundries are due to come online Beginning Next month January 2023. The foundries are working with Lightwave to create Process Development Kits (PDK’s) so that anyone can order it in their device from a foundry. Not from a single entity like in the past with from an Intel or IBM who would hold the patent. Lightwave has submitted and acquired patents that will permit it to transfer its technology to multiple partners that operate Billion Dollar foundries capable of taking this from producing 100’s on the bench in the lab to Millions in what will be perceived as overnight. While it has been a long road it was interesting to watch Sr. VP’s of Dupont Polymers, Corning, the individual credited with inventing the technology behind todays legacy modulators all come together The company is now being led by Michael Lebby and has surfaced this technology front and center at numerous industry conventions. Some look at the timeline as a sign that the company “took too long” but understand that until recently Silicon Photonics coud be keep up by placing modulators side by side to achieve say 100 gig with 4x25, or 200 gig with 4x50, then they did PAM4 which steps the signal instead of a castle prone to errors and requires correction, but NOW it has hit the wall. Lightwave does it with a SINGLE 1x100 or 1x200 now it has a 1x250. There is no way the industry will be able to keep up and must embrace this. Plain and Simple. Lebby refers to Silicon photonics as a Sunset technology while boasting that Lightwave is a Sunrise technology and has the solution for the next couple of decades.
Because the industry was ignoring this Lightwave was able to submit patent after patent in this area that cover not only the material which they will sell to the foundries but the devices it will operate in so that even if someone else invents a high-performance polymer it looks to me like as soon as they try to put it in modulator the “driverless modulator” patent will force them to reach an agreement with the company.
Lightwave proprietary Perkinamine requires so little voltage that it can embed the data directly from the 1’s and 0’s rolling off of the silicon and embed that data in laser. Today’s technology requires a driver to boost the voltage in those 1’s and 0’s. Of course, this adds costs, is more complex and produces heat which requires A.C. and there are millions of these in every data center.
Lightwave believes that it will be able to support multiple foundries across the industry with under 50 employees. When asked how many modulators 1/3 of a glass of whine (if it were Perkinamine) could produce the answer was about 10 thousand devices.
Currently Lightwave is focusing on modulators that will communicate from one side of the data center to the other <10km but there are many other uses.
Understand that Lightwaves requirements for production are well understood throughout the industry it is compatible with both InP and Silicon it is 3 Times the Speed, uses 1/10 the power and can fit 120 modulators where the industries best can fit 8.
Money on hand until 2024, no debt, $100 million dollar shelf, $35 Million dollar agreement with Roth Capital Partners.
Currently a short attack is occurring, making up false statements, twisting words, same game different day. Most likely it will take the announcement of PDK’s at the foundry level, surfacing a few NDA’s to partnership agreements, technology transfers etc. But at 3 times the speed using 1/10 the power this will move at lightspeed.
They have not even touched the Lidar, Medical, gaming, military etc. It is my opinion that this company will be bought out by company like AWS
This will do to Silicon photonics what transistors did to vacuum tubes.
That’s about the best I can do with what time I had.
