Agreed.
As someone once said a few years ago, and I badly paraphrase it, if someone cured cancer indisputably, half of NIH would kill themselves the same day and the other half would be trying to find something wrong with it.
A lot of these people dedicate their lives to curing this disease and someone else making substantial headway often seems to trigger jealousies. I think this is especially true when someone who feels they should have been “the one” feels eclipsed by another maybe that they feel is not their equal. So you get this exaggerated effect. Where if it were another white male, they might pull back the claws, but it’s too tempting to see if they can put some shade on it, then maybe come back later and say they improved it or it was their work that really made it useful.
