Trans American Aquaculture (TAA, Hondo, Texas) and its Algerian partner, Aqua Continentale signed a Memorandum of Understanding on July 28 in Algiers to jointly develop an aquaculture farm in the Wilaya of Relizane that will produce up to 1,000 tons of shrimp for domestic consumption and export to Europe.

During the signing ceremony Adam Thomas CEO of TAA said, “TAA will work with Aqua Continentale to develop a hatchery like its hatchery in Texas and transfer the know-how necessary to breed brood stock and commercialize its product successfully.”

TAA is a privately owned aquaculture company established in 2017 by Ecuadorian shrimp farmers and U.S. partners who reconstructed and modernized an abandoned 765-hectare shrimp farm in south Texas.  Today the farm includes a hatchery and broodstock facility and produces 1 million pounds of high-quality shrimp using organic principles and techniques.

Mr. Abaoub Madjid, CEO of Aqua Continentale said, “American agriculture’s scale and technology are well suited for application in Algeria, and I am proud to work with TAA to launch the first ever shrimp farm in Algeria using environmently friendly, state-of-the-art technology.”

This project was made possible thanks to the work of the International Trade Administration’s (ITA) office in the U.S. Embassy in Algeria, which issued a digital export contract opportunity notice to pre-qualified American companies in the aquaculture field.  ITA is a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce that connects American suppliers directly to opportunities with Algerian companies.
