The technology for a video phone existed for decades, but it was never used.
The limiting factor was the amount of bandwidth available. If you recall early BBSs, where you would connect with a 300 baud modem to the phone line and take an hour or two to download a tiny, by today's standards, file. It would have been a sad, slow conversation trying to do video communications with that technology. Today, I'm connected to the internet by a strand of glass - a 2gig fiber connection. I move huge files around all the time and if it's not done in a few seconds I wonder what's wrong and start poking at things LOL Times change. Sometimes you have to wait a bit for technology to catch up to the idea.
We all wore onions on our belts as it was the fashion at the time.
