I remember when people would worry that they might not be dressed when the picto-phone rang. Now that’s preferred!
I really do find that odd. The technology for a video phone existed for decades, but it was never used. I assume that's for the reasons you cite: that nobody wanted to be seen by strangers, or even friends, while unshaven or without makeup. Or clothes. Or just not looking great.
It amazes me how easy it eventually was to change those attitudes. All it took was teenagers and the iPhone.
