Personally, I don't invest in companies I believe to be run by criminals but to each their own. Usually, this is the narrative I would push as a short. Something doesn't add up!

I don't either! But suppose you initially invest because the science looks great, info is flowing as would be expected from a small bio in this position - all is looking good. Then the halt and the crash etc. Then while the shares are real cheap things happen that could be seen as an opportunity to self enrichment for LP or totally innocent as part of a larger plan. All can be explained away but at the least, the look is not great. And you decide to stick with the company with a feeling that some enrichment may be going on - but not so as to drive you from the hoped for success the science may have. So there is not necessarily a contradiction here in the sense you present. The situation is far more subtle, with a lot of grey areas and many unknowns. So you bury your doubts and hope for the best.
