Albania was and is, I'm sure, a strange place. But when I stayed at the Pera Palace in Istanbul, I had King Zog's room.
In the early '80s in Italy, there was a salumeria around the corner from my apartment that was strongly communist. One year, as the holidays approached, they put up a poster advertising a a New Year's Eve celebration in Tirana. FIVE DAYS of fun and frolic in a city with unreliable electricity and (probably) terrible food.
But I would have gone, if at the time the U.S. didn't forbid citizens from traveling there. It would have been a hoot, and a story to dine out on for the rest of my life!!
