I don’t know the facts of what you are discussing, but telling someone they’ll publish something false about that person is an age old method to stop people from doing something, like run for office. It is meant to instill the fear that they, and those around them, will be unfairly drug through the mud, so that the person is too frightened to do anything, and instead pulls out thinking it’s not worth it.

The question you should be asking, is why would people that forever said definitively TLD will never be released, want to scare someone from releasing results? Again, I don’t know the facts in this particular situation.
