As Janice mentioned, a practical kitchen is not a large room. It has to work well for the cook.

Yes. And people should bear in mind that line cooks in restaurants can turn out terrific food in a very small workspace. Just a stovetop and cutting board, really. And you don't want to be running across the room to get to the workspace, sink, stove, and refrigerator.

I can understand why people want a kitchen big enough that two people can cook in it comfortable. But the currently-popular design--huge island with seating for four, at least, and a big table with seating for eight--just makes the space look as if it's a table store.
