How else to explain the amorality, the ends justify the means behavior and the susceptibility to conspiracy theories that we see in SOME of the Ivy League and service academy 'educated'?

The Ivies and the service academies are quite different. The service academies are academically rigorous, but there's always been a politically conservative bent, as is the case in the military itself.

Another thing to consider it the simple fact that people change in their post-college years. An awful lot of hippies turned into yuppies n the '80s, you'll recall. People change their political views, too. Though in this case, a great many intelligent and well-educated conservatives walked away from Trumpty early on, and continue to work against him.
