Yes, not just neurons.

...sigma-1 receptors are not only found in the CNS space but also through out the body...

Yes, another big reason the magnitude of Anavex science is yet incomplete. So far the foci have been centered on CNS diseases. If those are the only diseases and conditions Anavex will be able to treat, it will be a giant winner, in every respect.

But you are correct. The sigma-1 receptor protein is in cells throughout the body, not just neurons. In these many other types of cells (hundreds, multiples for each tissue) the sigma-1 receptor modulates and promotes proper cell-keeping processes (autophagy, etc.).

Anavex science. It won’t just happen in diseased neurons. Other cell types; other tissues, other organs, other organ systems.

In previous posts I didn’t mention this, but crucially important. Blarcamesine is a small molecule, able to pierce the blood-brain barrier, to get into neurons and work there. Most drugs are incapable of this, or must be administered in large doses to get into nerves. Side effects then happen.

Blarcamesine apparently is able to enter normal cells, getting through the plasma membrane. As with the blood-brain barrier of nerves, getting a drug into a cell is often very difficult. Cells have mechanisms that expel alien molecules that get inside. Blarcamesine does it with apparent ease, without invoking inflammation or other expelling processes.

Will be interesting to watch, to learn of the molecule’s actions in other cells, against who knows how many new pathologies.
