Early June vaccination rates nearly meaningless amongst young people as it was difficult for even the most at risk elderly groups to get vaccinated “way back when.“ Since many younger people were less susceptible to serious consequences before the Delta strain became rampant, they didn’t bother to get vaccinated and deferred to those at higher risk..

The Delta variant produces a much higher load than earlier strains of Covid, and the viral load does influence how easy it is to spread AND how sick you are likely to get, so now it is more apparent that the younger cohort needs to get vaccinated, especially if they don’t want to bring Covid home to their older relatives or teachers..

The Berkeley campus, and other U of California campuses didn’t have many students on campus on June 8, the date of the article jbog cited. Berkeley and most college campuses are practically a ghost town in the summertime, especially this year and last. It’s only just starting to open up.
