As you've noted, the extra weight of the batteries is not excellent. The biggest difference is the efficiency with which energy is transferred from potential to kinetic energy. An electric vehicle is roughly 3X as efficient as a gasoline powered vehicle.

To be clear, I'm not making an environmental argument or even an argument that electric vehicles are 'better', just pointing out that once an electric vehicle is manufactured, it uses energy in a much more efficient manner.
