illustrates a creative solution to the problem of low survival, but it is not rocket science. According to Aquaculture (see below), Bowers achieved this (highest in the industry) survival rate by manipulating the harvesting process.

Bowers observed that the largest shrimp had the highest mortality rates but the industry practice was to grow one crop of large shrimp for maximum profit and then one crop of smaller shrimp per cycle. What Bowers realized was that by balancing the cycle and growing two crops of roughly the same size shrimp he could eliminate the higher mortality rates due to the crop of large shrimp and increase the overall survival rate (and profitability) of both crops by simply growing two crops of equal sized shrimp per cycle as opposed to one crop of large and one of smaller shrimp.
