Don't get me wrong on what I'm about to say. I really like the idea of an electric vehicle. Especially their acceleration stats.

But, in addition to the fact that (today) most of the electricity generated to charge these cars is created by fossil fuels, the technology just doesn't fit my needs.

Close to 90% of our annual miles driven is cross country from Arizona to Virginia and back. We try to drive a minimum of 400-500 miles per day on these trips. This exceeds the capacity of most batteries in cars today. And the current batteries take 12-14 hours to fully charge, depending on the type of charger. It won't be like pulling into the Love's Truck Stop and filling your tank with gas, then getting back on the road. Where is Love's going to put all the charging stations with a single car sitting at each charger for hours at a time? What the hell am I going to do at a Love's for hours while I charge the car?

Or, let's say I cut back my daily mileage and drive only 300 miles/day (probably less). Then I can charge up at the motel. Where is a motel going to put all those chargers? And I add days to my cross-country trip.

Not to mention the stress all those chargers would place on the grid and the security issues you mention.

I just don't think electric vehicles are ready for prime time yet, by a long shot. The battery technology isn't there yet (a replacement battery will cost you over 3 Grand. And how do we dispose of all those dead auto batteries?) As a daily commuter solution, sure. As a cross-country driver, no way.
