That's not entirely true. The Greeks were very interested in medicine, and made a number of discoveries. They were better at diagnosis than at creating treatments, much less cures, but that stuff is very hard. Even now, there are a great many diseases that can be treated, but not cured.

Surgery was performed in the ancient world. Sometimes it worked; sometimes it didn't. For example, trepanning was common--the word is derived from the Greek--and in a somewhat different form, it's still used today. Evidently the Empress Theodora developed breast cancer in her 40s. According to anecdotal reports, a mastectomy was suggested, but she refused it.
