Never said people need patents to sell product in countries. I said the protection that KBLB has against competitors is only good in Canada.

If silkworm-based spider silk turns out to be a blockbuster product, don’t you want KBLB to be protected from knockoff products? It might easily be cheaper for DuPont to make their own GMO silkworms than to buy KBLB. They could sell their knockoff products in any country except Canada. That is a real danger for KBLB.

Asking people in Togo to get their own patent would mean that KBLB would not be able to sell silk in that country without a license from the people in Togo. The same would be true in Japan or China. Owning patents is quite valuable, especially in the top-tier economies in the world. That’s why I said a patent in the US would have moved the share price considerably.

Right now, we don’t have much competition, but if the market proves out, others would like a piece of the KBLB pie. The only way to stop them is to have patent rights.

Canada is a tiny step forward. The fact that Thompson held off announcing this for months means he knew it was only a small positive development.
