The people behind WSB are, if I'm not mistaken, professional promoters. So...

You don't seem to get this at all. Of course Shorty played a role here. The stock was marginable, and so--at least initially--easily shorted. And there was a lot of options action, which played a very big role in what happened here. Penny stocks don't have options.
