Geez... My father was on a DE in the South Pacific. 40mm gunner. It wasn't a family tradition. It wasn't about kicking the snot out of a helpless, 3rd world, agrarian people who died by the millions, with barely enough small arms to defend themselves, let alone pose a threat to the USA. There was an enemy in WWII... with a hot shit Navy of his own.
