Obviously, he wasn't thinking clearly. Probably he never did. As you say, parking valets wear uniforms. Um, so you can tell they're valets and not just guys interested in stealing cars the easy way.

My father worked for a company that made refractories for the steel industry, and they sent him to northwestern Indiana to build and run a new plant. We lived in a small town 30 miles south of Gary that served as a bedroom suburb for Gary. But it was also still a small town, and the country seat.

There was a coffee shop, where we sometimes went to get burgers for lunch when I was in high school, and a drive-in burger place on the outskirts of town, but no restaurants. For that, you had to drive 25 or 30 miles, or go into Chicago.

I haven't been back since my junior year in college, but I'm sure it's all very different now.
