It's not just automation, it's globalization. Assuming your username means that you work in IT, then you know that our industry has been hit harder than most when it comes to sending jobs to overseas locations.

The internet allows IT jobs to be done anywhere, so in many instances the cheapest resource gets the work - in China, India, the Philippines, etc. And the H1-B program only made things worse.

Yesterday I struck up a conversation with a guy (in his early 60s, I'd say) who used to do computer automation/graphics. With people around the world willing to do that work for a dollar or two per hour, he's priced out of the market.

Finding something that has to be done on-site appears to be the key. In the graphics guy's case, he's working part time a swim coach. A robot would rust too easily to do that job smile
