How old is the computer? Have you considered just upgrading to a new one? I used to have a backup hard drive that I connected externally to the computer. Would do a back up every week. But the ironic thing was that the backup hard drive ended up dying before the actual main computer that I was backing up did! lol Anyhow, I'm thinking if you get a compatible hard drive that you can backup externally (by plugging it in when you do the save), you are saving everything, but you aren't installing it until you actually have to. If you do it this way and power down the right way hopefully you don't run into a hard drive problem again but if you do you have the back up ready.

Also, maybe don't turn the computer power off everyday. I leave the power on most days and then usually once a week I power down jic there are any updates.
