That just doesn't pass the basic common sense test. The virus doesn't just fly along through the air looking for someone to fly into. It's carried randomly by a medium, and it's the passing of the medium the mask is intended to mitigate.

It would not be wise to believe that any mask is 100% effective. But it's the reduction in rate of transmission that the science supports. That, and if any individual does get exposed, any form of mitigation would reduce the number of virus actually transmitted, giving the individual's immune system a more reasonable chance of getting that individual through Covid with reduced symptoms.

As an aside, probably the least effective behavior in respect to transmission is people yelling and screaming (even fighting) about the other person's mask or lack of.
