Yes, they did start making "compact" cares. Most were poorly designed and poorly made. So some people got in the habit of buying Hondas and the like. But we quickly forgot the lessons of the gas crisis of the 70s. By the 80s, Detroit was cranking out SUVs, and people were buying them. The bigger the better.
