The manufacturing base in this country won't ever be what it was for the first part of the 20th century. The service economy has taken over and companies like Amazon and WalMart are doing their best to keep the unions out; not by offering workers better pay, benefits and working conditions, but by convincing them that if they won't work for what the company offers, a replacement worker will be found.
