I can imagine only one scenario where the U.S. can get back to normal without a self medicated cure or the majority vaccinated.

The U.S. would have to resolve CV hot spots with the same draconian methods used in China. That means quarantine of cities or areas that are experiencing uncontrolled break outs through road blocks, shut downs of public transportation including airports & subways and severe restriction of public movement. That means shelter-in-place that's actually enforced. It would have to be accompanied by massive testing and the National Guard would also have to be brought in to assist local authorities.

I don't have much hope that this would work for a place like NYC. It would be a logistical nightmare and almost impossible to implement IMO.
