What developed nations do to un- and under-developed countries is always for the benefit of the developed nation.

When the cold war was raging undeveloped countries or most likely the leaders thereof with strategic value received aid (at varying terms of reasonableness) from the west in return for ostensible support of capitalism.

With the cold war retreat by both sides developing countries are getting less rapacious terms from the east than from capitalists. The populations of many developing countries are also currently seeing projects which benefit the masses more and their leaders less than past agreements with western nations had provided.
