I wouldn't select this land in the first place, but if I held it (say my great grandfather bequeathed it to me), I would do the initial work (mapping, geochem, geophysics) and if there emerged some compelling targets I would try to raise some $ and drill test them of course.
But if a few holes were drilled and were all dusters (for Au assays), I might not drill any further unless there were some very good indications (alteration, interesting geochem, the right sort of sulphides) in the drill core to encourage me to keep at it.
Eventually, you will pack up your tent and move on to the next property if successive drill programs come up with nothing more than boring, unaltered Tisdale volcanics with a few 1mm quartz stringers, 50cm wide graphitic shears and a few splotches of disseminated pyrite (without gold, not worth nothin...).
