chr p, on that Ed Stroligo article, I'm trying to imagine a huge IA64 plug-in processor on top of a stackable P4. Somehow, the image of an elephant humping a mouse comes to mind! Can't get rid of that image...

Seriously, with the die size difference and the power requirements of Itanium2, it doesn't sound very practical.

Also, this whole 64-bit on top of 32-bit processor idea has some real implementation problems. For instance, where is the P4 socket going to get all the extra I/O lines required? Are they defining a 64-bit P4 socket now?

The more I think of it, the more I think the whole stackable P4 to enable 64-bit desktops is a rather silly form of FUD. It does make good sense to use stackable CPUs for multiprocessing P4s, so that is undoubtably the target application.
