Linchuck, How many Starting left handed pitcher, can you get at their prime who is among the top 10 pitchers in the league easily in my opinion. Rules of supply and demand say he is worth that money. Too many teams need pitchers, and there are not many available. He may not be a #1 in your mind, but he is in mine, because realistically a lot of guys on that list that was mentioned you wouldn't take over Zito for the next three years. Due to either age, experiance, durability, and flat out talent. Zito is a rare find in terms of pitchers, hence why the money goes up is he a number 1 pitcher 40 years ago, probably not, but he is a number 1 now, because there are simply not that many good pitchers available at his age. Just my opinion though.
