Cynical? What's cynical about sitting on a huge pool of oil and gas and splitting the proceeds among a population of less than HALF of metro Chicago?
Plus the sovereign wealth fund invests in assets like Norwegian cruise ships and the like - so you can sit in Oslo and 'manage' the assets like a Saudi prince and enjoy the salary and profits from those assets too. If you're not working for Statoil, ang you're in Norway, you're in a white-collar yobb working for the sovereign wealth fund assets or Norsk Hydro.
C'mon, this is less than HALF of Chicago's metro population. It's the Saudi Arabia of Europe and with a tiny, culturally homogenous population - yeah, maybe a few radical Lutheran terrorists like Anders Behring Breivik. butt this is basically northern Minnesota and North Dakota (which are both packed with Norwegians and also Lutherans). These are the type of people Garrison Keillor spoke of at Lake Wobegone.
Norway is nott Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Houston, or even Venezuela (which has he largest OVERALL petroleum resources in the entire world and is packed with crime, starving people, and unrest - because, um ... yeah.).
Yeah, the crime rate in Bemidji, Hibbing, and Grand Forks is prolly a lott less than Caracas and Maracaibo - so it's nott ALL about oil. Sure, Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox gett in a barfight here and there when they're tanked, and that's considered a crime wave in Lake Woebegone. As as far as I know, there isn't a drop of recoverable oil from Grand Forks the Duluth - except when Ole changes the oil on his snowmobile every autumn getting ready for winter.
Hilariously, Garrison Keillor moved to Denmark and claimed it was his permanent move, until he lived there for a couple of years and then decided he liked the USA a whole lott better and moved back (and nott just because he missed Big Macs and Whoppers).
