Construction on Border Wall Begins in the Rio Grande Valley

The first construction of President Trump's long promised 'border wall' is underway in the Rio Grande Valley, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

J.D. Salinas, who heads the Texas Border Coalition, says crews have begun survey work for the wall in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, which is located in a loop of the Rio Grande south of the town of Alamo in Hidalgo County.

The stretch of barrier in that area will run about twenty miles, and the President is using a 2005 anti-terrorism statute to avoid conducting an environmental impact study.

Construction begins to replace border wall in California

The federal government has started work on a border wall in California to replace a decaying decades-old barrier.

The work that began Wednesday in the city of Calexico is the first wall contract awarded in the Trump administration outside of eight prototypes that were built in San Diego.

It is a little more than 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) long - a tiny portion of the president's plans for what he calls a "big, beautiful wall" with Mexico.

The administration is seeking $18 billion to extend the wall. Efforts to pay for it as part of a broader immigration package.

In November, SWF Constructors of Omaha, Nebraska, won a contract for $18 million to replace wall in Calexico. The administration waived environmental reviews in September.

Section of Trump’s Wall Under Construction in San Diego



A 14-mile section of President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border is under construction in San Diego at a cost of $147 million, according to local media reports.

Construction started Friday at Border Field State Park in San Diego. The wall will stand between 18 and 30 feet tall, include an “anti-climbing” plate and replace over 14 miles of improvised border fencing built in the 1990s out of scrap metal and repurposed steel plates.


“The construction of this new substantial wall will improve overall border security, the safety and effectiveness of Border Patrol agents, the safety of the public, and will enhance the atmosphere for business and commerce in the area,” Chief of Customs and Border Patrol of San Diego Rodney Scott told Fox 4 News.


Trump only received $1.6 billion for the wall from the omnibus spending bill in March, but is pushing for additional funding this fall.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Acting Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello, said the start of the construction was an “important milestone” and will “upgrade our existing infrastructure in San Diego.”


“Under this President’s leadership, we have a renewed commitment to secure our border,” Vitiello said.

“The new primary wall-project represents an important milestone in our work to secure the international border. Not only does it significantly upgrade our existing infrastructure in San Diego, it also marks the third concurrent wall project in the U.S. and reflects CBP’s unwavering commitment to secure our borders and protect our Nation.”
