kim strikes again and phrases his PR in such a way that it is unclear as to exactly what he has created.
Ignorance of history strikes again. You should remember that Kim waits for someone else to tell us the specifics. Your comment could be said of DS too. Kim waited for 3rd party verification before going public with DS numbers, BUT mentions DS in a letter to shareholders days earlier. Seeing Kim operate this way before, there is reason to expect the same. Kim is fairly careful to go where he knows he is safe going.
Kim falls short of specifics on June 9 2015
"The additional resources we have allocated are designed to allow us to develop new and more powerful transgenic silkworm strains using the latest in genetic engineering technologies. We believe this will allow us to produce even stronger and more flexible fibers. As early testing of these new materials has shown promising results, we look forward to releasing additional details as they become available."
Then Kim announces specifics on June 29
" A small number of Dragon SilkTM samples have demonstrated tensile strength as high as 1.79 gigapascals, exceeding widely reported spider silk strength (by as much as 37%, depending on source literature). Several samples of Dragon SilkTM also demonstrated elasticity above 38%, exceeding native dragline spider silk."
Now we see if Kim is true to past methods. I'd bet he already has results, but lets folks go where you just went....first. I can appreciate the drama. May the chips fall where I expect them to fall.
Did he genetically create a brand new strain to come closer to what the ARMY is asking for?
June 12 2018
"Company has completed more than 2,500 microinjections using the recently announced new spider silk DNA synthesis methodology. This new method allows for faster creation of larger and more complex spider silk proteins. Larger and more complex proteins are believed to produce improved silk strength, toughness, and elasticity."
They did say it is a "new strain."
"Tentatively called Dragon Silk 2.0; this new strain is the next evolution in the development of protective fibers, built upon the Company’s existing Dragon Silk, and is a further example of the Company’s ability to adapt and tailor the properties of its recombinant spider silk materials to meet end market performance requirements."
Did they use DS silkworm eggs for the microinjections? Apparently! Will larger proteins translate into stronger fibers? Apparently! It could mean they have a DS platform worm with key knockouts, or the new DNA synthesis method is complex indeed.
The knowledge database is getting rather large, for those that are following the potential.
Or did he just selectively test and breed existing DS worms to find a different mixture to get a stronger less elastic fiber that is closer to what the ARMY is looking for? There is a huge difference and it could point to issues going forward.
I think the issue is not reviewing recent history, rather than your inference of company integrity issues. Wisdom would dictate patience and waiting for details, before taking cheap shots.
