If you got cracked pills via mail order I'd suspect they got overheated and ruptured - sitting in the back of a hot delivery truck, especially if exposed to sunlight, can heat up cardboard boxes and contents a lot more than you may think. Last week I got a delivery of my protein powder and Green's 8000 powder from Amazon - nearly all of the delivery services leave things on my front porch, where they're sheltered from sun and rain by the roof. Whomever delivered the box last week decided to leave the box next to my deck door instead - idiot! It was > 90 F that day, and the box was in direct sunlight for who knows how long (I wasn't home). When I got home, the box was almost too hot to touch - and the plastic cans holding the powders were bulging so bad they couldn't stand upright on the counter, they wobbled and fell over. If a cap of V was exposed to similar conditions, I could easily see a few rupturing - the liquid inside will heat up, become less dense, and expand, putting too much strain on the capsule walls. The amount of force it takes to squeeze a pill with your fingers and rupture it is much higher than that required to rupture a cap from internal pressure (compression vs. tension) - most materials are much stronger in compression - and squeezing a cap allows some of the force to be dispelled by local deformation - with internal pressure you don't have that relief valve, the strain is distributed evenly on the entire wall of the cap.
