Yes, exactly. A simple analogy would go like this:

Someone wants to drive from Lexington Ky up to a remote location in the mountains of eastern KY to see a waterfall that is of interest. All they have is a paper map. They make the journey and arrive at the waterfall.

When someone else asks why they didn't use a GPS, the answer is that GPS via a cell phone is not available in the mountains and a satellite system seemed unnecessary.

When at the waterfall, there may be a great deal of water going over the falls or very little depending on the water supply feeding it. But, the paper map got them there just fine.

The satellite GPS would have decreased the probability of getting lost, but would not make more or less water go over the falls.


Now, there some people I would not trust to navigate without a GPS (they have the same last name as I do and are under 30)!

But, I would trust Dr Lee Russell to navigate with paper maps (2D) since he has 40 years experience. In fact, if he said the 2D maps indicated there was oil in my backyard I would be drilling tomorrow!
