That Sullivan Generator generated nothing but laughs.

His math is WAY OFF. He claims that in 1 cubic mile of sea water there is 1,500 tons of gold. It is actually closer to 1,500 ounces, as there is actually approximately 0.06 of a ton of gold per cubic mile of seawater. Maybe he can use that $1,000,000 to buy a new calculator, since he obviously needs one.

He also didn't once mention the SALT. The salt precipitates out, not the gold.

But that clip is an excellent example of how con men work. Take a tiny, tiny shred of factual evidence and blow it way out of proportion and fool gullible and naïve people into believing it. Gold mine scammers do that on a daily basis because there are two factors in their favor. The first is that few people have even a basic understand of geology and mining. Just like Sullivan, people know there is gold in seawater but they have no idea how much or how impossible (and costly) it is to recover it. Gold is not rare - it occurs everywhere on the planet in somewhat detectible amounts. What is rare is economically recoverable deposits of the stuff. Which is why the price of gold is $1300 an ounce. There are thousands of properties just in the Western US where gold is known to occur, but the properties are worthless because the gold cannot be extracted at a profit. Those properties are good for one thing and one thing only - scamming people.

And scamming people with gold claims is, unfortunately, not that difficult. Gold is valuable and it seems to captivate human beings. People seem to throw out their common sense when it comes to the metal - "gold fever" is aptly named and it still exists. Many people seem to think even an atom of gold equals instant (and easy) riches. When you combine gold fever with people's ignorance of the industry, they are easy marks.
