Palestinian Teen “Hero” Faces Trial For Slapping Soldier In Israel (HBO)

A Palestinian teen who has been touted as a hero for the resistance against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank is in court in Israel today, facing charges of aggravated assault and incitement.

Ahed Tamimi, who has been in the custody of the Israeli military for the last two months, rose to fame after a video was streamed live on Facebook in December, showing her kicking and slapping two Israeli soldiers.

Posters of the teen have been put up around the West Bank. To some, the videos paint Tamimi as a modern day "Joan of Arc". Others have nicknamed her "Shirley Temper", a child cast in a role in Palestinian propaganda.

Tamimi’s protests have drawn attention before. At age 11, she was photographed shaking her fist at Israeli troops. A year later, she was filmed biting a soldier who was trying to detain her brother for throwing rocks.

It is unclear what led Tamimi to strike the Israeli soldier. Some members of her family say that Tamimi hit the soldier she believed had shot her cousin point blank in the head last December with a rubber-coated bullet. But her father says she didn’t have to be provoked.

Tamimi turned 17-years-old while she awaited trial. Her family celebrated in her absence and invited VICE News into their home to talk about what she represents.

How To Build A Better Flu Vaccine (HBO)

The U.S. is in the midst of a record breaking flu season this year that is reaching levels as high as the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

On a call with reporters last week, the CDC Acting Director Dr. Anne Schuchat painted a grim picture of what the rest of the flu season has in store— and there's no sign this season is slowing down yet.

Predicting what flu strains will be circulating each year and what should be included in the annual vaccine is highly a choreographed decision that involves year round monitoring of influenza viruses across the globe.

Dr. Kathryn Edwards has spent over thirty years studying influenza and is the chair of the FDA committee that selects the strains. She says a particularly severe strain of influenza A called H3N2 may be why more people are getting so sick this year.

“We also know that the severity of an influenza season can depend not only on the virus but also on how well the vaccine that we are giving people matches the strain that's circulating,” Edwards says.

There’s also evidence that the way the majority of vaccines are made, by growing the virus in chicken eggs, can cause changes in the H3N2 strain that ultimately weaken the vaccines effectiveness.

There are two types of non egg-based vaccines on the market and studies are underway to try and understand which work best. The jackpot though would be the development of a successful universal vaccine.

Calling it a universal vaccine is somewhat of a misnomer because researchers are skeptical that one shot will ever give lifelong protection against the flu but the idea is that a shot could be given at any time and offer years worth of protection against all flu strains including potential influenza pandemics. More than 30 candidates are in various stages of testing with a few already in the early stages of human trials.

Trump's Biggest Potential Conflict Of Interest Is Hiding In Plain Sight
The largest American office of China's largest bank sits on the 20th floor of Trump Tower, six levels below the desk where Donald Trump built an empire and wrested a presidency. It's hard to get a glimpse inside. There do not appear to be any public photos of the office, the bank doesn't welcome visitors, and a man guards the elevators downstairs--one of the perks of forking over an estimated $2 million a year for the space.
Trump Tower officially lists the tenant as the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, but make no mistake who's paying the rent: the Chinese government, which owns a majority of the company. And while the landlord is technically the Trump Organization, make no mistake who's cashing those millions: the president of the United States, who has placed day-to-day management with his sons but retains 100% ownership. This lease expires in October 2019, according to a debt prospectus obtained by Forbes. So if you assume that the Trumps want to keep this lucrative tenant, then Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. could well be negotiating right now over how many millions the Chinese government will pay the sitting president. Unless he has already taken care of it: In September 2015 then-candidate Trump boasted to Forbes that he had "just renewed" the lease, around the time he was gearing up his campaign.
But that's all small potatoes. The real money in the Trump empire comes from commercial tenants like the Chinese bank. Forbes estimates these tenants pay a collective $175 million a year or so to the president. And they do so anonymously. Federal laws, drafted without envisioning a real estate billionaire as president, require Trump to publicly disclose the shell companies he owns--but not the hundreds of businesses pouring money into them or even the extent of the money involved.
"The public reading the [disclosure] form doesn't know who is paying the president," says Walter Shaub, who resigned as the federal government's top ethics official in July. The president likes it that way. Neither the White House nor the Trump Organization would provide a list of the president's tenants, much less reveal what they pay. Instead, Trump Organization lawyer Alan Garten provided a statement: "Following the election, the Trump Organization implemented a rigorous vetting process for all transactions, including leases, which includes a detailed review and approval by our chief compliance officer and outside ethics advisor." In other words, government ethics officials, charged with detecting conflicts of interest, have never seen the president's rent roll.
So we created one on our own, identifying 164 tenants, in virtually every industry, from all around the world, and then estimated payments, wherever possible, based on property records, debt prospectuses and conversations with real estate experts. (See chart, p. 91.) When tenants refused to say how much space they rented, we made in-person visits and took rough measurements. (There were obstacles: The day after we sent questions to the Trump Organization , two security guards kicked a Forbes reporter out of a shopping area of one Trump property.) When we could not get more detailed information, we assumed tenants paid rates comparable to those for similar properties in their respective markets. We believe we've tracked the sources for 75% of the rent flowing into the president's coffers.
The numbers are significant: $21 million here, $12 million there. The names even more so: At least 36 of Trump's tenants have meaningful relationships with the federal government, from contractors to lobbying firms to regulatory targets.
How tangled is it all? Forbes discovered one deal, previously unreported, in which Trump partially serves as his own landlord: The U.S. government is paying some rent to the person who runs it.

Michael D. Cohen, President Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, said on Tuesday that he paid $130,000 out of his own pocket to a pornographic-film actress who had once claimed to have had an affair with Mr. Trump.
In the most detailed explanation of the 2016 payment made to the actress, Stephanie Clifford, Mr. Cohen, who worked as a counsel to the Trump Organization for more than a decade, said he was not reimbursed for the payment.
“Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly,” Mr. Cohen said in a statement to The New York Times. “The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone.”
He declined to answer several follow-up questions, including whether Mr. Trump had been aware that he made the payment, why he made the payment or whether he had made similar payments to other people over the years.
Mr. Cohen has previously said that Mr. Trump has denied an affair with Ms. Clifford, whose stage name is Stormy Daniels.

Alivia Viellieux, of Muncie, Indiana, died at home Monday morning, just days after being diagnosed. The girl's grandmother, Tameka Stettler, said the family is second-guessing its decision not to vaccinate her.
Stettler said Alivia’s parents declined to give her the flu shot after hearing that the vaccination could be ineffective.
"Alivia did not have it because they had told us once the flu is going around it's not going to matter if you got it or not," Stettler said in an interview with ABC affiliate WRTV on Monday. "We just decided not to put those chemicals and the girls body if it's not gonna help."
"Nothing anybody says or does is going to bring that little girl back to us," she added.

The president’s budget proposal has some troubling news for the space agency’s next big astronomy mission.
The Trump administration has released its budget proposal for fiscal year 2019 and put dozens of federal programs on the chopping block, including a brand-new NASA space telescope that scientists say would provide the biggest picture of the universe yet, with the same sparkling clarity as the Hubble Space Telescope.
The proposal, released Monday, recommends eliminating the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), citing “higher priorities” at NASA and the cost of the new telescope.
“Given competing priorities at NASA, and budget constraints, developing another large space telescope immediately after completing the $8.8 billion James Webb Space Telescope is not a priority for the administration,” the proposal states. “The budget proposes to terminate WFIRST and redirect existing funds to other priorities of the science community, including completed astrophysics missions and research.”
The James Webb Space Telescope is a NASA telescope that’s almost ready to go after two decades of work. The Webb is expected to launch in 2019 to a point 1 million miles from Earth, where it will study the cosmos in infrared light and provide images and data using a mirror far bigger than the one on Hubble, which launched in 1990. WFIRST is in line after Webb as NASA’s next flagship astronomy mission, and is currently in early stages of design and development. The mission would launch sometime in the mid-2020s.
