How Can You Tell If Something's Spyware-free?
The previous item--- "Spyware-Free Download Manager" --- might make you wonder: How can you tell, before the fact, if a given app contains spyware? Of course, there are ways to tell *after the fact.* For example, you can install the app and then run Ad-Aware ( http://www.lavasoft.de/ ) or Opt-Out ( http://grc.com/optout.htm ) to identify and root out any spyware after it's on your system. That's good, and better late than never. But wouldn't you prefer to know if something is spyware (or not) *before* you install it?

These sites can help--- they maintain lists of all known spyware. Using them, you can search BEFORE you download an install. Cool!

KillAd (for those pesky pop-ups). The pop-up ads on the internet are on the rise and very irritating. The first time you come into contact with the ad, it will open, then you may easily add the ad to the "kill" list. The next time you encounter the ad, the program will automatically close the pop-up window with sound feedback that you may customize. You may also edit the list just in case you desire to see the ad at some time in the future. The download is small (42K). You do need to make a new folder and a shortcut to the exe program for your desktop. I asked and thank 2 of our members,(JackVance and Spearfish)for putting together a
Maintenance schedule:
You should run, in the Windows environment, the programs ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter on a Regular Schedule. At least once a Month.

It is recommended that you run ScanDisk before you run the Disk Defragmenter.

Some people encounter problems with these programs, being able to run them all the way thru without them quitting is the problem. You will have a message box popup that says "unable to complete program due to another program writing to Disk".

The way around this, without changing any of your settings, is to run the above in "Windows Safe Mode". To get to the Safe Mode selection box, you do the following: Start up the Computer, Reboot, and while the Ram count is running, hold down the control key on the keyboard. This will usually popup the Safe Mode selection Box, enter the number for Safe Mode and press Enter. Then go to Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools and click the ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter.

In certain Cases you have to press the F8 key to enter the Safe Mode.

Get Rid of the Old Junk

Windows 98 offers a great housecleaning tool to clear out file detritus from temp-file directories, caches, the Recycle Bin, and so on: Disk Cleanup. To run Disk Cleanup, select Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup. From the list of likely junk-filled places, select the ones you want to clear out, and click OK.
