It's only for uplisting. It has nothing to do with giving or taking shares away. Innumeracy is a terrible thing, and as we see in other spheres, lack of understanding can make a situation that is benign, seem terrible and that thought process has impact. But that's just the nature of the beast.

The reason for a forward split is to make a stock that is too highly priced, available to smaller investors, and it makes selling a few shares maybe, a little simpler because each share represents a smaller fraction of the total ownership interest. But neither transaction fundamentally changes anything.

The real issue is a company's prospects for success, and whether it will need to dilute shareholders and how much it will dilute ownership. Unfortunately, dilution is often a necessary part of early stage companies, and this is a challenge for owners who don't always fully understand exactly what they've bought. These are not blue chips.
