Naples is okay. As with any big city, you have to know what areas to stay away from. The scenery is gorgeous, and the weather is beautiful if you don't go at the hottest time of year.

And the pizza is fabulous. You can visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, too.

I think you're right on the safety issue.
