There short answer is I'm not sure of the true therapeutic index of ATIII, and in supraphysiologic levels it probably has some mild anticoagulant effects to result in bleeding diatheses. Clinicians have had very limited exposure (at least i can speak for myself in this country) with ATIII, and I woudl have to do a search, but in theory it has very limited effects not bound to heparin, and endogenous heparin is present in low basal levels, so (and I am saying this in theory) i totally agree with Dew that even if one overshoots in dosing so to speak hemorrhagic complications shoudl be limited.
the synergy between heparin and ATII in retrospect made the combination disastrous in DIC (and heparin may affect platelet function and promote bleeding independent of its anticoagulant properties, so using both together we now know is just not a good idea)
